Investigations continue, Kaepernick's participation in league uncertain

The league and Kaepernick’s lawyer sent out statements Friday saying that “the parties have decided to resolve the pending grievances” and that a confidentiality agreement would prevent either side from commenting further.

The protests slowed down this season, as the NFL made contributions to organizations chosen by players and promised more attention to social justice issues. But the controversy reignited every time there was a development in the case.

While he has been away from the playing field, Kaepernick has become an advocate for battling social and racial injustice. On Thursday, a person with knowledge of the conversations told the AP that Kaepernick turned down a chance to join the fledgling Alliance of American Football , seeking $20 million or more from the upstart league that pays its players $225,000 over three seasons.

The US territory, including its colonies

Were Japan’s targets considered “the United States”? Legally, they were indisputably US territory. But would the public see them that way? What if Roosevelt’s audience didn’t care that Japan had attacked the Philippines or Guam? Polls taken slightly before the attack show that few in the continental US supported a military defense of those remote territories.

But it is also missing Puerto Rico, which, although not a state, has been part of the country since 1899. When have you ever seen a map of the US that had Puerto Rico on it? Or American Samoa, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, the Northern Marianas or any of the other smaller islands that the US has annexed over the years?

The racism that had pervaded the country since slavery also engulfed the territories. Like African Americans, colonial subjects were denied the vote, deprived of the rights of full citizens, called racial epithets, subjected to dangerous medical experiments and used as sacrificial pawns in war. They, too, had to make their way in a country where some lives mattered and others did not.

Comment on the Laquan McDonald case and Jason Van Dyke's sentence

Why now? Because one fact sits there, for me, and vibrates. It has all along, and while I can’t vouch that it hasn’t been highlighted somewhere in the Niagara of articles and podcasts and TV specials and shadow puppet theater devoted to the case, I didn’t notice it and it seems germane now that Raoul is seeking to pile years of prison upon Van Dyke, which will neither reform the ex-cop, assuage the clannish moral blindness of a significant chunk of his former fellow officers, nor revive the dead teen.

Remember, he wasn’t a bigot shooting up a bar, or a commander torturing suspects. He was a cop, working. A scared cop, sure. Judgment impaired, obviously. Three years isn’t much for a life, and those who point out that it being a black life means some people value it a lot less are not wrong.

On the Rohingya crisis, and late justice

Today, more Rohingya reside outside Myanmar than inside the country. The diaspora initially comprised Rohingya uprooted by decades of violence and institutionalized discrimination — including sporadic military campaigns and a denial of citizenship. This longstanding exodus has established outposts around the globe, including refugee camps in Bangladesh, as well as communities resettled in America, Europe and Australia.

For example, Rohingya-led news sites like the Kaladan Press Network, established in Bangladesh, and Rohingya Blogger, established in Germany, regularly report on violations perpetrated against the community in Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The new Rohingya diaspora also has its own movements, groups like the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights, which advocates, among other things, for more Rohingya involvement in running the camps in Bangladesh.

"It all started with this little boy in my class. We were talking and he said, ‘Slaves didn’t do much because they couldn’t read or write.’ He kinda caught me off guard,' Bradshaw said. “I said, ‘Baby, if I snatched you up and dropped you off in China or Germany or Africa even, you wouldn’t be able to read and write their language either. Does that make you useless or any less educated?’”

“So many of our African-American students don’t know where they come from. All they are taught is slavery, the servitude side only,” Bradshaw said. “They need to know that we were great long before slavery. We built a country with our blood, sweat and tears, and the strength of our ancestors is why they can be great today. You have to see people who look like you contributing to society, and the African contribution is left out at school. Virginia Sen. Ralph Northam (D) announces to fight racism, won't resign

"It's been a horrific week for Virginia. A lot of individuals across Virginia have been hurt," Northam told The Washington Post Saturday in his first interview since the racist photograph surfaced February 1.

During that news conference, Northam said he had no plans to resign and also revealed that he had once darkened his face to resemble Michael Jackson during a dance contest in the 1980s.

He also vowed to "take a harder line" on Confederate statues in Virginia and to implement sensitivity training in his government, according to the Post.

“Our new silk line from Thailand is made by incredible women in the prison in Chiang Mai”

“I was curious about why these women were incarcerated – I had no images of what the prisons would be like,” she says. “The first thing that struck me when I entered was the fact that it felt like a village. These were ordinary women who had to provide for their families and ended up committing crimes such as drug trafficking or theft.”

The entrepreneurial side of D’Souza also saw business potential. Every day, the women would partake in craftwork. “The worst thing that can happen to you in prison is to do nothing. Prisoners are encouraged to engage in activities, but these women didn’t have anywhere to sell their products, and when they got out, they were further impoverished, which felt wasteful. The idea of turning forgotten resources into dignifying jobs was born.”

Today’s Very Important Poll: Northam’s crisis management approach - bold or bogus? 🤔

The governor is reading “Roots” and “The Case for Reparations” — has hired a new team to help

Northam’s policy team is looking at crafting a set of proposals based on the premise that the governor’s mistakes have rendered him keenly aware of inequity and the lack of justice faced by black Virginians 400 years after the first African people arrived in the Commonwealth, at Point Comfort, in 1619.

Virginia's boiling hot amid troubles

"Given recent developments, I believe that it is best for the Commonwealth of Virginia if Justin Fairfax dealt with these accusations as a private citizen," said US Rep. Don McEachin, one of the most prominent African-American Democrats in Virginia. "He can no longer serve us as the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia."

"The allegations against Justin Fairfax are serious and credible," McAuliffe said in a statement. "It is clear to me that he can no longer effectively serve the people of Virginia as Lieutenant Governor. I call for his immediate resignation."

Black bartender fired over allegedly racist intentions

Carinne Silverman-Maddox of Oakland County was the only black bartender at the restaurant on Oct. 13, the first day she'd changed her hair, when she was "abruptly suspended and dismissed for allegedly overpouring a single drink," according to a race discrimination lawsuit filed Tuesday. It adds that white co-workers were pouring drinks the same way and had been approached over it, but they were able to keep their jobs.

This is at least the third federal lawsuit in the past six months alleging racial discrimination against an employee by a business in Detroit's downtown or Midtown areas.

#Jerusalem has got a discrimination problem

Like many Palestinians, he had experienced suspicion and racism before in Jewish-majority west Jerusalem. Facing discrimination is common for Palestinians trying to rent apartments on the well-maintained west side of the city. Sometimes it’s an upfront “No Arabs” directive from the landlord, but more often it is harder to pinpoint; not getting a call back once an Arabic name comes up, for example.

In the decades since, a deep disparity has grown between the poverty-stricken Palestinian east side and largely Jewish Israeli west Jerusalem: for example, annually only 13% of the city’s building permits issued by the Israeli government are granted to Palestinians in east Jerusalem.

This is why blackface is offensive - CNN

h/t @johncarroll@pluspora.com
It's been nearly 200 years since white performers first started painting their faces black to mock enslaved Africans in minstrel shows across the United States. It was racist and offensive then, and still is today.

The latest controversy to erupt over blackface is a photo in Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's medical school yearbook. It depicts one person in blackface and another dressed as a member of the Ku Klux Klan. After initially apologizing for appearing in the photo, the Democratic governor now says he is neither the person in blackface nor the person dressed as a Klansman.

However Northam's case plays out, it's important for every American to understand what blackface is and why it's so offensive.

#Northam's former medical school to examine all past yearbooks

Homan said the panel for the investigation will include "advocates for diversity and inclusion representative of our greater community, including African Americans and other people of color."

"The picture is shockingly abhorrent and absolutely antithetical to the principles, morals and values we hold and espouse of our educational and research institution and our professions. Racism and discrimination in any form is not acceptable," Homan's statement read.

Remember: Racism is only bad when it doesn't object your ally

“Democrat Governor Ralph Northam of Virginia just stated, “I believe that I am not either of the people in that photo.” This was 24 hours after apologizing for appearing in the picture and after making the most horrible statement on “super” late term abortion. Unforgivable!” tweeted the president.

In comments in a radio interview Wednesday, Northam was asked what would happen if a child was born after a failed attempt at late term abortion.

What we have to remember, too, is that he would still support Steve King, who is openly and doubtlessly racist all the time. Racists would always cover each other's back when it was necessary. But when the alleged racist is a Democrat, stab him right away.

An obituary to the famous Ragitime composer Scott Joplin

He would come to be revered as a ragtime giant, writing such hits as “Gladiolus Rag,” “The Entertainer” and “Maple Leaf Rag.”

Just a teenager, a baby-faced and well-mannered Scott went out in the world, boarding rumbling trains with a steely determination to find gigs in a segregated landscape.

His signature style emerged as a combination of jumpy timing and sweet-sounding piano work. In a widely quoted description, Stark himself would say Joplin possessed “the skill of a Beethoven with the sentiment of a Black Mamma’s croon.” It was a way of saying that Joplin mixed a European classic sensibility with black folkloric music — by way of the piano.

Fernando was filmed making cut-throat gestures aimed at Tamil protesters outside the Sri Lankan high commission in London on 4 February 2018. Demonstrators were highlighting concerns about human rights violations against Sri Lanka’s Tamil minority. Footage of the incident went viral on YouTube.

Outcry due to racist yearbook photo puts pressure upon Virginia governor

Northam, who took office a year ago, said in a video posted later on Twitter: “I have spent the past year as your governor fighting for a Virginia that works better for all people. I am committed to continuing that fight through the remainder of my term and living up to the expectations you set for me when you elected me to serve.”

“These racist images are deeply disturbing. Hatred and discrimination have no place in our country and must not be tolerated, especially from our leaders – Republican or Democrat. Northam must resign,” Warren said.

Could we first investigate whether he still holds any racist views, or committed any actions as Virginia's governor that are related to racist views? This would be great, thanks a lot. Just because he shot racist photos in his youth and early adulthood, but this doesn't need to mean he's still such an arsehole. People are able to change, you know?

Jewish groups and Australian Labour Party urge government to ban conspiracy theorist David Icke for preaching hatred

Labor has written to the immigration minister, David Coleman, calling on him to ban Icke from the country on the basis ofhis “extreme antisemitic views, including campaigning for Holocaust denial to be taught in schools”.

In December there was uproar in the US after the Pulitzer prize-winning author Alice Walker recommended Icke’s book And the Truth Shall Set You Free in an interview with the New York Times Book Review.

Now I remember where I've heard his name before! It was about Ms. Walker who recommended on of his pulp (non-)fictional writings!

Meghan McCain no longer declares herself a Republican

In a Saturday interview on CNN's "The Van Jones Show," McCain, 34, said, "I'm still a member of the Republican party and I vote a Republican ticket. But Republicanism is so tied up with being for Drumpf."

"We're so outnumbered," she said of mainstream Republicans. "I think something like 80 percent of Republicans support President Drumpf. Maybe they're doing it because they don't have another option but I think the populist Drumpf brand really has taken over, which is why there's this sort of no-mans-land that I'm in because I didn't become a Never Drumpf-er, either."

At the end of the day, she said, "I'm just here to ask questions, to represent where I come from, to represent my party. I'm here to represent my family. If people don't like it, they can replace me. 'The View' is a rotating seat – it's like having a residency in Vegas."

This filmmaker spent months interviewing neo-Nazis and jihadists. Here’s what she learned.

Deeyah Khan, a Muslim woman, met her enemies — and came away more hopeful than ever.
Ken Parker was the guy in the film with the swastika on his chest who was posting neo-Nazi flyers in a Jewish neighborhood when I met him. He was saying the most vile things I’ve ever heard. He actually marched at Charlottesville as well.

Well, he called me up a few months after the film aired and he said, “I’ve left.” He said he left because he used the word “friend” to describe me. Now, this was one of the most extreme people I met. But his experience with me opened him up to speaking to other people who are different from him.

So he actually became friends with the pastor of a mostly black church who lived in his apartment complex. The pastor invited him and his fiancée to his church, and Ken basically stood in front of everyone there and said, “I used to be in the Klan, now I’m in a neo-Nazi organization, these are the views I hold ...”

And after he was done, people came up to him and hugged him and said, “Look, we detest what you stand for, but it takes a lot of courage for somebody like you to come in here and share what you have shared.”

That was the last straw for him, where he realized that the people he hated so deeply are showing him nothing but kindness and compassion and an open heart, and are showing it to him even though he doesn’t deserve it. His whole ideology fell apart.

I’ve maintained my friendship with Ken and I’ve connected him with other former neo-Nazis because I know how hard it is to leave these groups, whether you’re a white supremacist or a jihadist. These movements become your identity, your life, your whole network of friends, and when you leave, you’re completely shunned. So we have to support people who want to get out.

White Supremascist James Jackson pleaded guilty for murder of black man

The murder of Mr Caughman came at a time when hate crimes were rising throughout the country and in New York City. While New York has continued to be one of the safest big cities in the country, the number of reported hate crimes increased by 5 per cent last year.

“The pain is still there,” said Mr Caughman’s long-time friend, Portia Clark, 66. “I’m grateful he pleaded guilty to all of the charges and they can take him back and throw the key away.”

During his interview with detectives, Jackson said he intended the murder of Mr Caughman to be a “declaration of global war on the Negro race”, and that he wanted to “inspire white men to kill black men, to scare black men and to provoke a race war".

I'm not a racist, but I love dogs

“Don’t say hi to my dog if you aren’t going to say hi to me.” I was extremely surprised and faintly called after her, “I just really love dogs.”

What should it say? “I’m not racist, I just love dogs” seems a bit reductive, but it is the truth. I usually operate with a fairly high level of emotional intelligence, and I am completely stumped by the appropriate move here. I no longer harbor happy ideas of us becoming neighbor friends. Am I racist and clueless? Help me.

Either way, the best response to what she said would have been, “I’m sorry I was rude, I’ll say hello next time we run into each other.” Not “I just really love dogs.” From now on, if you see her out and about, offer her a quick smile or a brief hello, but take your cues from her. If she seems inclined to be distant, don’t try to force a connection.

Why are people so weird? I mean, just because someone rather says hello to your dog than to you doesn't mean the person is racist, although you do belong to an ethnic minority. This person might just be a little bit weird. Not everything is straightly forward racist. Damn, people really need to calm down a bit.

#Covington Catholic School has a history of racism

At least three reasons suggested this photograph was an authentic image. First, the official YouTube page of Covington Catholic posted a (now deleted) video on 24 January 2018 titled “Colonel Crazies Compilation Video” — a reference to the nickname given to that school’s cheering section — which showed numerous students covered in black paint present at several basketball games. One clip could possibly be from the same game shown in the photograph, based on the distribution of painted players and the year (2012) the video was allegedly taken:

Today, the people (but not "leader") of America celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.
Now more than ever his words ring true:

"Rarely do we find men who willingly engage in hard, solid thinking. There is an almost universal quest for easy answers and half-baked solutions. Nothing pains some people more than having to think."

Tomorrow's MLK's birthday!

The upcoming holiday will give many people a three-day weekend.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday that falls on the the third Monday of January.
_A good amount of places that are a part of your normal routine could be closed, so don't let the holiday sneak up on you and confuse you. _

The link may have some interesting information for those of you who live in the state of Pennsylvania, and of course for the rest of you who live in one of the other 49 states.

Aside of this, we should especially remember MLK's words nowadays, in days where even the youngsters behave disrespectfully against the Natives who were vanished almost completely from their native land, because the European settlers claimed this land to be theirs. Racism spreads thanks to the orange buffoon, discrimination has become a ubiquitious feature. Social division becomes wider and wider, polarisation likewise. We have to do something against, people have to unite again, and stop themselves from devastating each other, to be unable to realise that those people along the border seek help, and not their lives and possessions. Lies accelerate the decision; thus - stop lying, stop sharing lies, stop believing in them, act reasonable at last! We are reasonable beings, you are a reasonable being, the peak of the foodchain. Act like it!

The Racist Politics of the English Language: How we went from “racist” to “racially tinged"

The media’s use of “racially tinged” telegraphs that racism is normal, non-pathological, and within the range of mainstream political disagreement.
Soon journalists began to mirror the “color-blind” language being adopted by white-power activists. One of the best examples of the journalistic shift can be seen in 1957, the same year as Thurmond’s filibuster, when Little Rock’s Central High School became the site of the nation’s most iconic battle over school desegregation. In October of that year, many newspapers carried an Associated Press story about the “racially tinged” actions of a group called the “Segregationist League of Central High Mothers.” While not necessarily causal, this moment represents a hinge: opposition to the civil rights movement was increasingly described by journalists as “racially tinged” rather than “racist.” A 1963 article in the Baltimore Sun described the “racially tinged protests of some white parents.” In the same year, an article by Bruce M. Galphin in the New York Timesexplained that “the presence of a Negro juror . . . substantially reduces derogatory racial references in jury-room deliberations and racially tinged wisecracks from judges and lawyers.” What made the wisecracks “racially tinged” was that, in the year of the Birmingham Protests and the “I Have a Dream” speech, code words were beginning to replace straightforward descriptions of racist activities. The nadir of euphemism is surely a dead tie between the Associated Press’s 1964 description of “racially tinged explosions” which were set off “near the recently desegregated campus of the University of Alabama” and “across town near a Negro cafe”; and a 1953 Associated Press story that described the trial of two white men who kidnapped a black motorist and set him on fire as a “racially charged case.”

By the 1990s, however, when the use of such expressions began to increase dramatically, their application was less as euphemism than as matter-of-fact description of forms of racism that had become normalized as essentially non-pathological and within the range of mainstream political disagreement.

Totally not racist comment about Rashida #Tlaib

The comments were made by Annabelle Lima-Taub, a city commissioner in the south Florida city of Hallandale Beach, in the aftermath of Tlaib saying she wanted to "impeach that motherf----," a reference to President Donald Drumpf.

"Proudly signed," Lima-Taub wrote, according to a screen grab of the post. "A Hamas-loving anti-Semite has NO place in government! She is a danger and [I]would not put it past her to become a martyr and blow up Capitol Hill."

Oh look! Her comment was even less subtle than I first thought it was. How grateful by our hicks of the deep south. My darling was right - all the clichés are right about the Deep South, and they seemingly love them.
