As far as I am aware, the Article 13 only applies to commercial providers. That would mean that providers of alternative social networks, such as #diaspora pods, are not affected as long as they don't pursue a commercial interest.
I could even imagine that, with Article 13 in effect, more people are switching to alternative social networks with non-profit background to host their content. That would be even good news for diaspora...

#Diaspora #Question: Is there an easy way to find out which aspects I shared a limited post with?

I think it's possible to find out by digging into the json dump of the account data, but I was wondering if it could be obtained more easily and I'm just too stupid to see how...

Diaspora is a secret

I listened to TWiG last night and heard Mike Elgin mention Pluspora as a place some Gplus refugees are going, which is true. Elgin was very big on plus for a long time and he was one of the few journalists aside from @Steven Vaughan-Nichols who posted much. What is strange is that Mastodon was mentioned, but Diaspora was not. Even Laconi.ca/Status.net got mentioned. Diaspora must be the best kept 8-year-old secret in social networks.

What do we have to do to attract more positive, creative people to the network?

More development would be nice, but that requires resources, and I won't harp on that again here.
If you like Diaspora, it would be good to give that a thought? How to spread the word? Share your experience in blogs, podcasts, conversations of any kind, where appropriate.

That's all I got.

This link shows the discussion for the last 7 years, pros and cons. It also offers a place to donate to the bounty that might make editing become a feature. The bounty is currently at $420. I would guess it should be closer to $1,000 but for all I know, that may not be sufficient. If you have the option to donate and want the feature, feel free to do so. Nothing will happen if you do not choose to donate, because Diaspora is free software and people like our hosts here on Pluspora are donating time and their own money to make it so.

For those who are #newhere from other social networks, here’s a bit of handy vocabulary to help you navigate this new social network universe:

- Protocol - An agreed format that enables software applications to communicate with (or “federate” with) each other. The two most heavily used protocols around here are Diaspora and ActivityPub. As an end user, you don’t have to care about the protocol you are using and you don’t ever see the “protocol” other than it enables or limits which users you can see.

- Platform - The software application that implements a protocol(s) for federating. The Diaspora platform implements the eponymously named Diaspora protocol. Mastodon, for example, implements the ActivityPub protocol. Friendica implements both the Diaspora and the ActivityPub protocols.

- Pod - The server(s) running a particular platform (software application). Also known as an “instance” or a “node”. For example, pluspora.com is one of the many pods running the Diaspora platform; mastodon.social is one of the many pods running the Mastodon platform; and libranet.de is one of the many pods running the Friendica platform.

- The Federation - The collective of pods running platforms that implement the Diaspora protocol. This includes all pods running Diaspora (the software application), Hubzilla, Friendica, or Socialhome. The users on *any* of these pods can connect to and interact with each other.

- The Fediverse - The collective of pods running platforms that implement the ActivityPub (and OStatus) protocols. This includes all pods running Mastodon, Pixelfed, Hubzilla, Friendica, Socialhome, or many, many others. The users on *any* of these pods can connect to and interact with each other.

- The Free Network - The collective of pods in The Federation and The Fediverse, combined.

Hope that helps and doesn’t make this seem more complicated than it actually is. The main difference from other social networks is that no single entity owns and runs a platform. On G+ or Facebook, you are locked into that platform/company to talk to other users. In the Free Network, one set of volunteers writes the software and puts it out there for free, and another set of volunteers downloads the software and runs it on their servers and invites us to have user accounts for free. (But you should definitely donate to help them with the costs, if you can.) If we, as users, decide we aren’t happy with our current experience, we can change platforms or pods and still keep all of our friends/connections. On Facebook, G+, Twitter, and the like, you are locked in; and if you want leave, you go cold turkey.

Glad you joined us here in the land of choice.

G+ style Multi-Column Streams in diaspora, Tumblr, Mastodon, Hubzilla, Friendica, YouMe, and MeWe.

I’ve put together CSS styles which provide multi-column Streams in various social media platforms. This has a huge effect on browsing speed. To use them, you:

1) Download Stylus plugin (Chrome, Firefox or Opera): https://add0n.com/stylus.html

2) Install desired Multi-Column style from here: https://userstyles.org/users/773238

3) Modify the domain it acts on if you're using a different pod

Enjoy!

= = = = = ADDITIONAL NOTES = = = = =

diaspora is the most refined, with a lot of extra features like multicolumn comments, autoexpand all posts, font size customization, and other UI enhancements

Tumblr is also solid; it keeps the standard width of Tumblr posts and is responsive to width (2 or 3 columns)

Mastodon is maybe 95% good, depending on how you prefer to use Mastodon.

Hubzilla is maybe 80% good. Because of the right sidebar, this is limited to two columns by default.

Friendica is maybe 60% good. There's some sort of vertical scrolling bug when the left sidebar is too tall. If the left sidebar is short enough to fit on screen, all is good. But if the left sidebar is too tall, then scrolling gets stuck when you're too near the bottom of the content.

YouMe is maybe 40% good. It works, but it also affects single post view. And YouMe itself is really buggy right now (it only just launched). But the good news is that my userstyle can be used to produce single column (it's normally 2 column, which not everybody likes).

MeWe is maybe 50% good. As with Hubzilla, the right sidebar limits available space. So, it only provides 2 columns by default. And due to the complexity of MeWe, it only applies to the home and Groups pages - so, only single column view if you go to a single group. But as far as I've noticed, it's not buggy.

Of these platforms, the only ones I use significantly are diaspora, Tumblr, and Mastodon. Those will be the best supported, naturally.

My python re-write of pod_feeder is now in a usable state. I'm going to begin testing it on some of the feed accounts I control. If anyone else would like to do the same and give me feedback, that would be greatly appreciated!

This new version should be much easier to debug thanks to the use of the excellent feedparser and diaspy python libraries. I was able to complete this script so quickly because 75% of the work had already been done for me :)

Diaspora* usability tip

In the sidebar over on the left at the top of the Stream page is a Bookmarklet link. You might already know that you can click the arrow to the left then drag the text 'Post to diaspora' onto your bookmark bar to turn it into a bookmarklet. While looking at any web page, you can click that bookmarklet and a pop-up window will open with the title of the web page and the link to it ready for you to add some hashtags and post it to Diaspora.

Did you know that if you highlight some text on the page before clicking the bookmarklet, that text will be formatted for you as a quote? It would be nice if browsers let you highlight more than one piece of text by using Ctrl+Drag, but we can't have all the things.

I hope you found this useful. If you did, how about sharing it?

Mkay #diaspora, what is this thing, where i comment a lot on my own post...

Well .... over on good olde google plus i had a weird habit. Whenever i was binge watching/listening some stuff, i thought was worth sharing, i posted links with at least the full name/title of the video/clip/source mentioned.

Just to tell others (and myaybe myself later on) i've been there and found it worth sharing.

There is a somewhat special part of this which i called #emotimes, because i have times where i are very depressed and sit here, listening to older music (haha;)) and just cry...

On g+ i had a collection for that, so everybody could opt in or opt out....

Here in #fediverse or at least on #diaspora on the #pluspora pod we have no such thing.

Someone said, how about posting one post and put things which follow up on that as comments...

Well ... works for me. ;)

At least, for now. ;)

And .. by the way .. usually you are just opted out. To opt in on any of these posts, just click on like and the network will do the rest..... But don't complain afterwards! ;)

I have an account about a personal blog on #freehumanfr

I don't know what happened but it appears it was deleted without any kind of previous notice, like I had never created it. The reshares, likes and commentaries were gone as the tears in the rain.

I just talked about my opinions and some anime reviews (nor politics or controversial topics) So I don't know what I had done bad :/

I thought that deleting profiles wasn't possible on federated networks. Could anyone explain me what happened?

I sent a mail to Gabriel (Freehuman Podmin) four days ago, but I haven't received an answer
